What is a HEIC file?

Since iOS 11, iPhones and iPads save photos in HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) format by default when the camera is set to "High Efficiency". HEIC files are about half the size of comparable JPGs, but many Windows apps, websites, and upload forms cannot open them.

HEIC to PNG or HEIC to JPG?

Choose PNG when you want a lossless copy for editing or printing, or when the image will be cropped and saved again. Choose HEIC to JPG when you want a small file to share or upload, since a PNG of a full-resolution phone photo can be very large.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC file?
HEIC uses very efficient lossy compression, while PNG stores every pixel losslessly. A 12-megapixel photo as PNG is often many times larger than the HEIC. Use HEIC to JPG if file size matters.
Can I stop my iPhone saving HEIC photos?
Yes. In Settings > Camera > Formats, choose "Most Compatible" and new photos are saved as JPG.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and your photos stay on your device.
